History

Médecins du Monde UK was formed in 1980 by 15 doctors who broke away from Médecins Sans Frontières when assisting the Boat People fleeing Vietnam via the South China Sea. Dr. Bernard Kouchner was Médecins du Monde's first President (1980-1982).

Médecins du Monde UK was registered as a charity in England and Wales in 1998, and is based in London. We contribute to the work of Médecins du Monde worldwide.

Médecins du Monde is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which means that we operate independently, responding to genuine needs not political motivations.

Médecins du Monde France operates as an Association. This means that the President and the Members of the Association decide the policy of the organisation. The Members elect the President every three years, and none of them are salaried. All the Members are volunteers who have previously worked in the field for a minimum of six months. The President of Médecins du Monde France is Dr. Pierre Micheletti....
