Médecins du Monde UK (also known as Doctors of the World UK) is part of the medical humanitarian aid organisation that was first established in France in 1980. The international MdM network comprises of 12 delegations and 4 representative bureaux in the Americas, Asia and Europe.
Providing healthcare to marginalised populations is an integral part of Médecins du Monde’s work in both developed and developing countries. Access to healthcare is provided thanks to the voluntary commitment of medical and non-medical professionals who give their time and expertise to help vulnerable people who have been affected by natural disasters, conflict or extreme poverty and social exclusion. MdM’s volunteers also ‘bear witness’ to any obstacle to healthcare or any human rights abuse that they see, giving a voice to people whose stories would not otherwise be heard.
Médecins du Monde runs three types of healthcare projects: emergency response; post-emergency reconstruction and rehabilitation; and long-term healthcare development.
Médecins du Monde began to provide healthcare to vulnerable people in Europe 20 years ago in France, when doctors and nurses returning from volunteering overseas realised that people in their own country had great difficulties accessing healthcare. The Médecins du Monde European network now runs healthcare projects in Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Médecins du Monde UK’s launch of Project: London on 16 January 2006 has made the UK the ninth country on that list.
Médecins du Monde UK has been working in the UK since 1998 (Registered Charity Number 1067406). Médecins du Monde UK has been registered with the Healthcare Commission as an independent healthcare provider since December 2005. (Service Number: 0000061334).
