Situation:
Although the human and structural damage caused by the earthquake on 8 October 2005 meant that the continued presence of international organisations on the ground was essential, the diplomatic and regional position of Pakistan made the internal political situation very delicate. The government has made major commitments to improve public services. However, women continue to be deprived of access to their basic human rights and domestic violence remains a daily reality for many women.
Activities:
In 2004, MdM began a nine-month pilot project with the objective of providing medical, psychological and legal support to women who arevictims of domestic violence and who have taken refuge in theDar-ul-Aman in Sarghoda. This activity was then expanded to three new refuges: Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The feasibility of this programme depends on the mobilisation of civil society and on the governmental authorities, as well as on the training of Dar-ul Amanstaff.
