Medecins du Monde is active all over the world in its mission to provide medical healthcare to vulnerable populations. Here are some examples of our projects around the globe.SOUTH AMERICA
- Guatemala: Health of Women Working in Factories
With half of its population under the poverty line and a very high level of corruption, Guatemala offers little protection for its population's basic Human Rights. Even though they have the right to access healthcare, women from indigenous communities working in Maquilas with little education and from extremely disadvantaged circumstances are unable to defend their rights to primary healthcare.
AFRICA
- The Ivory Coast: Protecting Street Children
The conflict which hit the Ivory Coast from 2002 left the country even weaker than before. Poverty levels skyrocketed, with over one third of the population under the poverty line and dramatically low levels of education or access to healthcare, particularly affecting street children.
- Zimbabwe: Reducing the Impact of HIV/AIDS
With over 1 300 000 people who are HIV positive and a third of Zimbabwe's adults HIV positive, the health situation in Zimbabwe is one of the most disastrous in Africa.
ASIA
- Afghanistan: Reducing risks amongst drug users
Afghanistan is entirely incapable of managing its public health issues, unable to insure the access to health for vulnerable populations, particularly drug users. With 92% of the world’s heroine production, it keeps an increasingly alarmingly high level of it for internal consumption.
- Mongolia: Fighting alcoholism
In a country where life has remained focused on a traditional nomadic way of life, alcoholism has become a serious problem. Over 13.6% of the total population is dependent upon alcohol and up to 40% practicing harmful drinking. Women and children are the first victims of alcohol-induced violence.
