Guinea - Improving health in prisons

LOCATION: Kindia prison

SITUATION:
At the end of chaotic elections, marred by violence, Alpha Condé was elected president of Guinea. The economic and social context still remains fragile and the situation in prisons is worrying. Doctors of the World is tackling malnutrition in prisons in conjunction with a local partner and aims to improve detention conditions.

SOLUTION:
The objective of the partnership between Doctors of the World and the organisation Kindianaise Assistance to Detainees (KAD) is to improve detention conditions in Kindia central prison in terms of the environment (hygiene and sanitation improvements, refurbishment and maintenance of the premises), health (medical consultations, supplying a pharmacy, nutritional support for malnutrition), and reintegration (education, literacy, income-generating activities). DOW provides technical, financial and moral support to KAD.

BENEFICIARIES: 827 detainees

RESULTS:
In 2010, 224 detainees were treated and 827 received care from KAD for malnutrition, in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

OUTLOOK:

Long term project

Doctors of the World plans to increase support for income-generating activities as well as looking for new funders for the programme so that KAD can become increasingly independent.
