- Iraq five years on: a serious health crisis and millions of refugees

Médecins du Monde has been working in Iraq since 1991. In addition to caring for sick children, one of the main objectives is to train Iraqi healthcare staff. Between 2000 and 2004, MdM was also involved in the creation of paediatric post-operative care units in four hospitals in Baghdad, Basra and Mosul.  During and after the 2003 conflict, the international delegations of Médecins du Monde provided emergency support to Iraqi health facilities.

Since 2006, Médecins du Monde has been working from Amman and Erbil, supporting Iraqi teams and local NGOs to implement programmes to improve emergency medical care in Iraq.

- World Health Day 2008: protecting health from climate change.
In 2008, World Health Day focuses on the need to protect health from the adverse effects of climate change. The health impacts of climate change are already evident indifferent ways: more people are dying from excessive heat than before, changes are occurring in the incidence of vector-borne diseases, and the pattern of natural disasters is altering.

These impacts will be disproportionately greater in vulnerable populations we work with across the globe, which include the very young, elderly, medically infirm, poor and isolated populations. Vulnerability is also high in:
•areas with a high endemicity of climate-sensitive diseases, severe water scarcity, and low food production;
•small-island developing states and mountainous regions; and
•megacities and coastal areas in developing countries.

- MdM working with the isolated Rift Valley population
(March 08)
MdM working with the isolated Rift Valley population
Since early February, MdM has been assisting displaced populations in the Rift Valley following the post-election violence. MdM is also helping to restore the health care system in the region, which has been adversely affected by conflict.

In Kenya, humanitarian problems are alarming: 30% of health facilities have been closed because of the persistent insecurity and displacement of nursing staff.

An MdM team, which consists of eight people including a doctor and two nurses, provides mobile clinics to displaced people at four sites in the Rift Valley. MdM supports local communities in the region with clinics and dispensaries in order to revive local structures badly affected by people leaving and by the shortages of medicines and equipment. There are approximately 10,000 beneficiaries. Read more

This project is fully funded with generous support from DfID.

- MdM UK and its coalition partners call upon the UK government to address the tragedy unfolding in Gaza
(march 08)
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worse now than at any time since the occupation began in 1967. The situation is documented in a report published today by a coalition of leading humanitarian and human rights organisations  – comprising Amnesty International, CARE International UK, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Médecins du Monde UK, Oxfam, Save The Children UK and Trócaire.

Our report “The Gaza Strip: A humanitarian implosion” urges the UK government to take the following immediate steps to avoid further deterioration:

    *  Exert greater pressure on the Israeli government to open the crossings into Gaza and stop fuel and electricity cuts in order to stem the worsening humanitarian crisis.
    * Help facilitate a process of Palestinian reconciliation that can lead to a credible and effective peace process with Israel.
    * Abandon the failed policy of non-engagement and begin negotiations with all Palestinian parties, including Hamas.

Update: Since the publication of the report, Medecins du Monde UK has learned that Munir, the man unable to leave Gaza for cancer treatment, is in Jordan where he is receiving the treatment he needs.  This is good news for him.  We hope this is the first of many stories which will be told in the days to come, of improvements in the lives of those in Gaza

MADAGASCAR: Support mission post hurricane Ivan (2008)
Following the passage of hurricane Ivan on 17th February, there are around 580 injured and more than 320 000 people facing up to the devastation left behind in Madagascar. Between 30-90% of buildings were destroyed in the affected areas of the hurricane in the Northeast parts of the island. The healthcare system has been severely affected as 16 health centres in the Fenerive Est area were either significantly or totally destroyed. The stocks of medication are unusable and the equipment was considerably damaged.

With close coordination with the local health authorities, Médecins du Monde launched a mission to provide assistance to Madagascan healthcare personnel on the 4th March. The team is made up of a medical professional, a logistician, and a general coordinator.

MdM will provide three months worth of essential medical supplies to all the affected health centers and contribute to the renewal of basic examination equipment. The team will also support the Madagascan health system in organizing their health centres and in running the premises.
