During 2007 Medecins du Monde UK was active both here and abroad. On the ground in the United KingdomOur clinic in London continues to work on making healthcare accessible to the community’s most vulnerable. We now have two years of data which paints a clear picture of the barriers to access and helps us lobby the government to address those barriers.
On the ground overseasWe continued to support our international network, present in over 60 countries worldwide. Over the past year we sent both volunteers and considerable financial support to Darfur, Indonesia, Cambodia, Somalia, and Kabul. Based upon evidence gathered in the field, we provided testimony to the House of Commons International Development Committee which had called for evidence on the question of development assistance in the Occupied Territories. This testimony was relied upon and incorporated by the Committee in its report, as well as the government in its response. A team of researchers is working on an updated survey and this evidence will likewise be sent to the Committee. We also provided evidence to the Committee in conjunction with its inquiry into the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
2008Already this year, we have responded to emergency crises unfolding in Kenya and Cameroon. And our work in Somalia is growing more critical against the backdrop of the deteriorating security situation. While of course it pales in comparison, access to health here in the UK is also under threat. The government proposes to bar failed asylum seekers and undocumented migrants from primary care. And we have seen troubling examples of critically ill refugees deported back to countries where they will not be able to access the treatment they need. When we look at the list of countries our patients have fled, in search of safety and a measure of peace, the connection between work done at home and abroad is all too clear. And we are more committed than ever.
Our work is only possible because of our network of committed volunteers and the generous support of our donors. A debt of gratitude is owed to all.
