The NHS is too effectively policed for health tourists to get easy access and as a result it is catching those who are entitled to care. That's the view shared by our Project:London doctor Naomi Hartree in an interview with BBC Essex.
Dr Hartree was responding to a BBC report which claimed that hospitals are writing off billions of pounds due to unpaid bills by foreign patients. Project:London's experience, from helping vulnerable people access healthcare, is that patients are in the country on average for 3 years before they seek medical care.
