Project:London Typical Roles

Project: London is an advocacy project, established in 2006 that provides information, advice and practical assistance to vulnerable people to help them access NHS and other services.

 Clinic Doctor
The responsibilities for the Clinic Doctor include:

•    Providing medical checks for service users in the clinic setting.
•    Provide information on appropriate services the service user should access
•    Completing medical forms for our clinic to abide by Healthcare Commission regulations.
•    Raise awareness amongst service users on the importance of maintaining their health.
•    Educate service users on maintaining good physical or mental health until they access mainstream services.
•    Prescribe appropriate medication for service users, if required.
•    Advocate on behalf of service users to fellow medical professionals in the NHS.

Qualifications and qualities required to volunteer as a Clinic Doctor include:
•    Full registration with the General Medical Council to practice medicine in the UK
•    Completed two years Senior House Officer training or equivalent
•    Medical Indemnity Insurance Cover which includes working in Medecins du Monde’s clinic
•    Confident working with interpreting services
•    Non-judgmental behaviour or attitude towards our service users and confidence in working with service users from diverse backgrounds.
•    Fluency in English
•    Confident telephone manner



 Health Promotion Nurse
The responsibilities for the Health Promotion Nurse include:

•    Discuss medical concerns with service users while at locations other than the clinic
•    Provide information on appropriate services the service user should access
•    Raise awareness amongst service users on the importance of maintaining their health.
•    Educate service users on maintaining good physical or mental health until they access mainstream services.
•     Advocate on behalf of service users to fellow medical professionals in the NHS.
•    Work as a support worker within the clinic on non-health promotion days

Qualifications and qualities required to volunteer as a Health Promotion Nurse include:
•    Full registration with the Nursing Medical Council to practice nursing in the UK
•    Completed two years post nursing training.
•    Medical Indemnity Insurance Cover which includes working in Medecins du Monde’s clinic
•    Confident working with interpreting services
•    Non-judgmental behaviour or attitude towards our service users and confidence in working with service users from diverse backgrounds.
•    Fluency in English
•    Confident telephone manner

 Support Worker (Non-medical)
The responsibilities for support workers include:

•    First point of contact for service users in the clinic or health promotion setting
•    Listening to the service users needs and identifying other needs they may have
•    Completing data collection forms with the service user
•    Engaging with the medical staff at the clinic to provide appropriate information to the service user
•    Assisting service users with administrative procedures and advocating on their behalf to the mainstream NHS services
•    Accompanying service users to their appointments, if needed

Qualities for volunteering as a support worker include:
•    Good social and communication skills to make service users feel comfortable
•    Non-judgmental behaviour or attitude towards service users and confidence in working with service users from diverse backgrounds.
•    Previous experience in working with vulnerable people, such as migrants or homeless
•    Confidence in working with interpreting services
•    Fluency in English
•    Confident telephone manner


 Interpreter
The responsibilities for interpreters include:
•    Providing an efficient and clear interpreting service for support workers and service users
•    Willingness to do face-to-face interpretations, if needed
•    Willingness to accompany service users to access health services

Qualities for volunteering as an interpreter include:
•    Some availability during clinic hours (via phone)
•    Clear communication skills
•    Fluency in English and other languages
•    Non judgemental attitude towards service users
